Meet Mattia De Luca, a London based editor and filmmaker with a passion for bringing queer stories to life on film. Her filmmaking education has a global footprint, having studied at San Francisco Film School and Sydney Film School before settling in the UK. In this interview Mattia shares her love for indie filmmaking and her nostalgia for the Steenbeck from film school. Enjoy Mattia’s career story!
Describe your job role and the kinds of projects/clients you work with.
I work as a freelance editor on all kinds of projects from social media content to trailers to showreels to short films to feature films and TV shows. Since moving to the UK I’ve mainly work with indie filmmakers but have worked with some bigger companies in the US and Australia.
What does an average day look like in your post-production working world?
Editing like my life depends on it! I work on premiere pro most of the time these days. Though I miss the Steenbeck my first film school had. I’m working across multiple projects at the moment a feature documentary about hitchhiking, a couple of trailers and wrapping on a micro web series. I use the Adobe creative suite for a lot of my work as it’s pretty seamless workflow between programs.
How did your career in post-production begin?
I first edited professionally in AVID out of Sydney film school, but the first time I edited anything was on iMovie! In film school I we learned editing fundamentals on Steenbeck editing tables cutting 16mm by hand and I learned where we got all the editing terms from! Then we did intensive courses on AVID. But I rarely use either these days.
What has been your career highlight?
Even though I’ve been involved in bigger projects it would have to be editing the trailers for two sapphic short films “You and Me Makes Three” and “Notice Me”. Finally getting to work on queer projects after so long in the industry has definitely been a highlight!
