What does an average day look like in your post production working world?
An average day for me in the post-production world starts with going through scripts and having meetings with the directors and or producers I am working with. I usually start with the technical process of importing the rushes and other post-production materials and proceed to organize files and folders. The video editing part is the most important part in post-production, and this is because the “magic” begins to take place here. This is the part where raw footage and other post production materials are transformed into a story. For me, when assembled footages on my timeline begins to find its own voice and rhythm, then my day becomes fulfilled or complete.
How did your career in post production begin?
My early experiences in video editing started as an intern with “OneShot Studios”, a reputable production company in Ghana. I worked as a media manager. I organized media files to be worked on by the professional editors. I gained skills in video and post-production audio editing skills. I became well versed in video and audio editing software such as adobe premiere pro, Final Cut, DaVinci resolve and adobe audition. I got exposed to editing footages shot in different formats. During that period, I was able to edit quite a number of informative videos, documentaries, trailers and television shows.
What has been your career highlight?
In October 2022, I edited a TV commercial which was structured like a short film (Geisha Journals of long-lasting love.) It’s a story about the depths of a mother’s love and the sacrifices they make for their children. I was thrilled when the client told me it was well received by their international partners. Mostly, receiving good feedback from the director, client and viewers alike, also make up the highlight of my career.
Who are your role models in post?
I admire people who work in post-production because it requires a lot of creativity and skill. I admire them even more when they are females because it takes a lot of courage, fortitude and a lot of confidence to be exceptional in this industry. I admire legends like Dede Allen, Sally Menke, Anne V. Coates and Thelma Schoonmaker. I believe their contributions helped shape cinema.
What advice do you have for others wanting to start a career in post?
The principal advice I have for anyone wanting to pursue a career in editing is to learn to pay attention to details and keep up to date with the new technologies and other innovative discoveries regarding post-production.
